Fairly common, but the adults actually look pretty nice :)

Got a dozen at 1" from Jeff a few months ago. Their growth has been painfully slow, which has been well documented. I run out of patience and got two pairs of adults from him a week ago. Hope they'd color up some more after they settle in.

i have a pair of adults too, each given by a different friend of mine... and i have no idea to sex them either..

there are a little flaring here and there, but they generally solitary and don't swim together unlike my Satanopercas & Geos
 
Jeff said he vented them. Two of the more territorial ones also have much more pointed dorsal fins than the other two. He mentioned that the facial pattern method might not be accurate, and that Paul Loiselle had taken it back.
 
Very nice! They are kind of plain as juveniles, but they do get pretty as adults.

I have just one. I picked it up almost two years ago, and they are indeed very slow growers. Mine is around 3.5" now, it was around 3" when I took this picture seven months ago.

Beautiful fish. This group of semi-Geophagines have caught my eye lately, though at the moment I only have Acarichthys and young Guianacara.

Supposedly male Biotodoma have iridescent blue lines beneath the eyes, but in females the lines are broken into dots. Only dominant females display this trait though, according to Weidner
By the way, nice plant scape in the Biotodoma tank.

Nice color! Mine are about 4.5". They looked good in Jeff's tank so hopefully they'll get the color back...

I asked Jeff to pick out two pairs based on the facial markings as you mentioned but he said it's actually wrong....The dorsal trait is very obvious though and correlates with obvious behavioral differences - the two males bicker for territories and both try to court the females.

Wow .5" in 7 months is painfully slow but they look like they are worth it.

Looking at him now he is probably more like 4", but 1" growth in seven months is still really slow.

Pete, have you had similarly slow growth?
