my marble mated with my Leo for the first time a week or so ago and in doing so bit her disk.

it seems to be getting bigger and spreading, the bite that is, although I don't think he still boring her?

she is eating and moving around as usual, it doesn't look infected or anything, is this normal or should I be doing anything to get it to heal?

thanks

It's a nasty bite but it will heal. There may be a bit of a scar there. If it doesn't heal well then a small dose of aquarium salt can be used but I have never needed to in 7 or more years of keeping rays. If they breed then you do get bites unfortunately.

Someone on here once posted "if you want perfect rays then just keep one"

Thanks mate,

Yeah I'm not concerned about them biting/scars, is just how it is. Just wanted to make sure that it wasn't getting worse and is there was anything I could do to help it. Thanks

Looks like normal breeding behavior. It gets rough. If it keeps getting worse and she gets stressed and stops eating you should separate. If she is still eating and not infected you can let it ride. For the deep wounds that expose vascular tissue, or if signs of infection I'll pull them up to the surface in a net. Then put drops of methylene blue on the wound. Stuff stains but stops infections well without having to treat the system. Nothing too serious yet. I've had large chunks ripped out, discs regenerate amazingly well. Spotting unfortunately does not.

Great diesel thanks,

The bite does appear to be getting longer so I presume she's being bitten still? Unless the wounds typically get worse before they get better?

And when you say vascular tissue how do I know it's at that point? Thanks

This female P14 was badly beaten by a male trying to breed her. She has multiple bite wounds and injuries. This picture is from 48 hours after being removed. You can see the white gash behind the eye beginning to close up around it's edges already. The wound is from a large strip of flesh being ripped away by a male. The fresh wound exposed muscular tissue along the "ribs" leaving a divot. The front disc you can see skin lose and flapping. The fresh wound was doused with methylene blue and she was placed in a tank without males. This pictures shows how quickly they start to regenerate, I wish I had the fresh wound photo also.

Excuse the coloration, the tank was treated with nitrofurazone as a preventative.

Two weeks after the incident and she had healed nearly completely but has lost spotting.

The fresh wounds generally have a white color on the wound edge, that will turn back to base color then begin to regenerate and heal in time. If the white flesh persists or spreads they're still taking damage. This can go on for months in breeding. If you see blood that means there is a more significant wound. Sometimes I'll MB at this stage, but not always. If that progresses and gets fuzzy or cotton like growth that is fungus. If it gets black or slimy/necrotic that is disc rot.

Ah got you okay thanks. her front wound look similar to mine although mine is deeper. I will try separate her and see if it heals up and if not meth blue it.

Annoyingly I have pups separated atm so not sure how going to separate her, I need another tank! Lol

As long as she's eating, she'll generally be okay. This female had stopped eating. That along with the sensitive location of the injury, it was decided to separate immediately. I do not think yours is this severe yet, but be ready just in case.
