Bitten by The Cichla Bug...Please Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks everyone, looks as if kelberi would be the best bet but monos aren't out of the question. What about cost and availablity? Seems monos may be easier to come by?

i know u like the looks on the monos and kelberi but u might want to look into some orinos i think there good looking fish and from wut i hear they are slow growers but yea any of these cichla would be fine in that size tank regardless of how fast they grow u might just need to stay away from tems and azuls

Thanks I'll look at the orinos also. Growth rate is not really that important, what is important is that they could stay in a 96" x 24" tank.

I agree that you should look into Orinos too. If you were to get these Cichla now (I know your plans are for the spring), wild Orinos and Monos would be pretty easy to find, as there are vendors who are carrying them (I think Snookn22 for Orinos, tangledupincichlids for Monos and Orinos, etc...). I don't know of any vendors who are carrying Kelberi, so the only way you could get your hands on those is if you lucked out w/ a private seller. I don't know if this availability will change when you are ready to buy your Cichla.

Ya, I saw TUIC has Monos and there is talk of a Colorado group buy:naughty:

I just need to get the stand for the stacked 240/300 and 125g built. Once that happens I'll have some extra tank space to grow them out in. As for the new 240/300g well I gotta pay off the 450g before I can justify buying another tank:(

Sweet! Now Brian's gotten into cichla too! Mike and Paul it's all your fault. If I hadn't seen your collection and how amazing they look, I probably would never had got into them LOL!

Yeah, seems to be more contagious then the H1N1 flu:nilly:

So with orinos, they get about the same size as monos?

It's not monster enough unless you have Tems.

Bro 100% Kelberi 5+. And i would even throw a MONO in for sure. There are enough stunted Monos around that you ca find one that will fit. Someone has one they need to get out of there 55g trust me. Now this is real advice if you were really wanting a Mono/Kelberi combo. I second the Orino/Kelberi idea just an awesome combonation. And I remember the first official MFK meeting you saying "never". Never say never you never know when the bug is going to catch you. Welcome the Cichness! Also I would hold off on looking for other tank mated until you reach a desired size first. I would hat for you to spen all that money on Kels and have them come up with the short end of the stick.

So your suggesting jamming some tems in a 240g just so I can call it monster?:screwy: Man, I feel sorry for your fish.
