We'll see with this new batch of blacks I got, but I had a baby black go from 2.5" to 9" in four months. Not exactly slow growth. Seems hao has had decent growth from his black.

a baby black when young can grow similar to the silver, but when it reaches adult size, it will develop slower and slower , the max size i'd seen is 24", i just put pingpong ball to avoid DE :D

Blks do grow slower.. much slower..

you can tell the difference when adults.. but i've seen a 24" blk before in person.. and as all South american arowana get bigger and older.. they all get ugly and deformed...
They get ugly and deformed because they are not been taken care well. If they are being taken good care even a at fully grown they will still look good.

Black aros do grow fast at young but not as fast as the silver aro especially when they hit pass 15-18 inches.

Besides a black looking really nice at a young age and not having the drop DE effect what are the other benefits of black because to me it looks just like a Silver at adult and which one would you prefer? Thank You for your time :D
A black aros looks nothing like a silver aro when adult hood except for the body shape. Black aros will have steel silver color with blue and yellow stripes on the scales and with electric blue fins and have some yellow on the tip of the fins. If not taken care well the yellow tip on the fins will become white and the electric blue color on the fins will become dull.

As for the silver aros. They are greenish silver with pinkish red stripes and with pinkish red fins. If it's lacking in carotene it will turn to pale yellow or pale white.

As Bderick67 said, to the untrained eye they look very similar. Especially when you only see pics of them in the internet.

:iagree: Fully.

Black Aros have a slimmer profile, have a different maxillary angle and fin/tail shape/size than the Silver.

And while the High shine Silver is definitely a fish to admire and drool over, a Steel Blue Black with bright yellow "Racing Stripes" on the fins is just as beautiful if not more.

The only thing I can think to add is that after keeping adults of both silver and blacks, the blacks seem to scare more easily and benefit more from floating plants, dimmer lighting, and calmer tankmates than their silver cousins.

my high shines are also very skittish. i'm not sure if they are just not used to me or that's how they are, like blacks.

I had regular silvers before and they are not easily spooked at all. weird because a high shine silver aro is just a very shinny regular aro.

IME it is just the opposite, though I think tank size and individual fish have alot to do with it. My 20" black is much more cautious then my either of my silvers, but she does not spook as easily from sudden movements like my silvers do.

This behavior was also the same with a smaller black I had raised to 9", before I lost it:(

Both the silvers though allow me to touch/pet them while neither black would allow this to happen.

once my baby black hit about 6" he slowed down ALOT. I haven't seen much growth out of him in a while.
