at my lfs they have 2 blacks for £200 - if memory serves me right they are roughly 6"+

good deal or not? the main reason for getting one is the fact they aely get DE. ive read they end up looking like silvers once mature and dont grow as large either (giving me more room to add something else!)

For 6"+ IMO the black should cost $125-150. I personally would just wait until one of MFK vendors get them in, be cheaper with shipping included. But hey, its your cash, do what you want.

**edit**
-Yes, black aros pretty much never get DE

-No, IMO blacks don't look like silvers as adults. I mean their orange pinstripe and blue base tail color stays and their body is still a dark gunpowder. The only thing silvers and blacks have in common is body/tail shape.

-Yes, blacks max out around 30" and their growth slows down around 14"

A ph of 8 is not a problem, as the nitrification process of your biological filtration will reduce your ph naturally. You may end up needing crushed coral or like to actually keep the the ph stable and not drop so much.

Here is an example from. My tap water is 8.1 straight from the tap with a kh of 4. After sitting for 24 hours, the same water has a ph of 7.5-7.6. After 48 hours of sitting the same tap water has a ph of 7.3-7.4.

Once your tank is established, if you do say no more than around 30% a week depending on your bio load, then the ph of your change water is insignificant to impact on the well being of your fish. When it comes to arowanas and ph, they are very hardy, and can live in ph conditions from 5.5-8.0 as long as the ph remains pretty stable.

Don't worry so much about the ph, concentrate more on keeping good water parameters, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, low nitrate, weekly water changes, and keep the tank temperature as stable as possible this includes during water changes.

Why is it that you seem to think that black arowana growth slows at 14"? You ever have one that large? My black is 1.5 years old 20" and has been consistantly growing at least an inch per month.

All aros are different, but generally blacks slow down their growth at a smaller size than silvers. Silvers usually slow down their growth around 20- 24" (in their 1st year). And yes I had a year old black aro and he was 14", after that his growth slowed down. I think most aros slow down their growth after their 1st year. Even with this black I currently have, his growth is much slower than the silvers I had in the past.

Could be that arowana in your care just grow slow. Your statements are not the norm from what I've experienced or from what I've seen posted here on MFK over the last 4 years.

Talking cost is nonsense anyways, so many factors that go into the price of the fish. One of them being location:D

Big difference if we are talking LFS or online vendor. My best LFS in my state says cheapest black they can get would cost $500. And I bought my little guy for $55 from snookn21.

Yes, that would be another factor, but you did not only pay 55 bucks to get that aro into you tank. Supply and demand would be another, once snookin sold most of his baby blacks his price then jumped to 100 bucks a piece.

I'll just stick with my previous statment that talking cost of the fish is nonsense.
