how long would i be ok with a black arowana in a 125, if i bought one at 3-5"

Up to you. A year is just my personal opinion. Growth rates vary but you just don't want a 3 foot fish that only has 18" to turn in. You'll find some that say longer and probably a few that say a year is too long.

Once it got too big you could always buy one of those cheap 300 gallon pools (or rubbermaids) and keep it in there until you upgraded. They're round so there's plenty of turning space.

That would be up to you. Just so long as you don't stunt him or cause discomfort. You can always sell an aro on here. They are very enjoyable. But....... you'll get attached big time so if you get it just prepare to be saving for an upgrade.
