Black Arowana Tankmates Q

hey bryant.. I guess you dont have this full grown aro yet and I'd say 30" is about what you should call adult size.. I have had 2-4 inch dats with 18" aros with success.. aros are generally (imo) not very predatory, and I'd say if the aro is under 12 there is a better chance of the dat harassing the aro.. my 4 inch indo gave a 12 inch red line snakehead a warm welcome to the tank.. they can fend for themselves..

ofcourse there can be freak accidents but as long as the dat (with spikes up) wont fit the aros mouth you should be pretty safe.

Any dats at 5"-6" should be fine with any full grown arowana, Bryant. However, some arowana doesn't tolerate datnoid well. Datnoid won't get eaten by arowana, but could get some beating. Just keep an eye to make sure the beating is not severe. Datnoid is good at defending itself, though.

Do you actually have a full grown black aro? I'm guessing not, I'd say if the aro is 15"+ you'd want the dats to be at least 5-6" depending on your set up and the nature of the fish.

its funny.. most ppl do dats with arowana.. but for me I dont like Dats.. never did and possibility never will......

but to be honest.. Arowana wont eat tankmates of cichlid body shape around 5-6" or comparable to its size....

Just dont put them with frys.. cuz then they will be food.. sometimes 3" fishes arowana will not touch.. if they are cichlid fish...

However, the 5-6" rule doesnt apply to tetra fish!!!!!! They WILL become food Arowana like long slimp looking food.. and if u give them tankmates like that.. they will eat them... easier to fit in their mouths rather than big round cichlid who might not fit inside their stomach..

BTW I put a 3" it in with my 14" green and he was all over it looking for a snack, took the dat out and put it in another tank for a few months until it was 5" (eats pellets like a pig and seems to be growing fast) and now they're fine.

i have dats ranging from 3 inch to 7 inch in with my 10 inch black arowana , also a pair of 7 inch oscars ,, plus a royal plec ,, all is peaceful ,

My jardini is about 20" now and a real sob. I have a dat, sevrum, jurupari and, a pleco. He beats the crap out of the sevrum to the point of where I've seen him sit upside in the plants as if to say I'm dead. The dat and juru can get away from mr. rage. And the pleco? I don't think my jar knows what it is.

Sorry man, I have some knowledge regarding aros but none with dats. Seems there was some decent advise given though.
