Just curious to see if I'm missing something. I haven't really seen any tanks with black substrate/black background yet, but everything tells me this would display the stock's colors much better? Maybe someone has some pics of their own setups to give me an idea of what this would look like. It seems nearly every tank I've seen only has one or the other, never the two in tandem.

All a matter of preference. There was a post on here just last week with people discussing the same subject. Quite a few people have black on black in their tanks. I think the general feeling was that brighter colored fish looked better against black, while darker colored fish or fish with little color looked better against a colored background or substrate. Black backgrounds and substrate are also not recommended for tanks with Flowerhorns in them. Maybe search out on here 'black on black' or 'black tahitian sand', and you might find some threads with pictures.

I have a black background with natural tan sand. After seeing the black on black, I think that looks a lot better. But it also depends on what fish are gonna be in said tank.

I was planning on doing black on black and stocking the tank with some Electric Blue African Cichlids. I'm hoping it will look good. Whatcha think? :p

EDIT: Or should I go with light colored sand?

You should also get live rocks and baby tears. They make you feel like if you have wild tanks.
