I read and see allot of peeps use a black background for there tanks. Just wondering if it helps to see the fish better or just a matter of preference.

i prefer it i think it greatly changes the look of a tank going from nothing to black and you can make them out of pretty much nothing i have 2 with painted cardboard and one with a black sheet

Out of the three tanks I have running the one with a black background looks the most professional. All my future tanks will be painted black!

That cool. i was thinking bout painting a piece of cardboard black. i think it would make the tank look better then nothing

I spray painted my tank a week ago, it shows my albino convicts more, but the black convicts seem to blend in. I think it makes the decor look better too :D

In my opinion... a solid background keeps the focus inside the tank as opposed to on the background itself...

Color is a matter of preference and logically the decor and stock of the tank will influence the preference of background color...

I have black, deep blue and pale blue backgrounds...

I painted the back of a 125 gal the exact same color as the (blue) wall it was sitting against... this looked very good...

I use latex indoor paint and paint the back glass of the tank. It is very easy to make a nice consistent converage and if/when you wish to remove it the paint peels right off (unlike spraypaint). It's also very easy to paint the back of the tank without making a mess... I've done it in the living room (try that with spraypaint ;) )

Depends on the fish. I used to have a black background with black sand. Most of the fish I had in there I thought would be more vibrant, but they blended in. The Silver Aro I used to have poped, the Pbass would mostly be dark and didn't look as good, Chinese Perch blended in, Jag was dark, JD was dark, Albinos work real well in there, CK and RCK blended in surprisingly, and Dats were ok, GT was good, etc. You pretty much want to go with fish with a high shine or Albinos for them to really pop out. Otherwise, they just blened in, IMO

If you don't have many light colored decorations in the tank, rocks driftwood etc, it can look way too dark. All my tanks have a black background and black sand though, and I really like it.
