Black blotches on Dovii head?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The dude at the LFS mistook predatory behavior as aggressive behavior and I bought it on grounds that it would be aggressive so I'm going back and asking for money back in exchange for the fish

The point I was trying to make with the top down pictures is bone structure in the head and shape of the snout. Throw the colors and body shape out the door. Because gars can show all different types of colors, shades, patterns, so until the Alligator Gar reaches significant size you won't be able to tell them apart with markings.

The picture the OP posted of the side view of the Gar the snout looks very pointed and longer then any juvie Alligator Gar I've ever seen. The head does not look thick enough. The alligator gar got it's name from its alligator like head.

So forgive me for not believing the fish store owner that sold you the "Super aggressive Alligator gar that could handle a Dovii" and instinctually say it's 1000000% an Alligator Gar.

Most "Alligator Gar' sold in LFS are not actually alligator gars. But instead hybrids. Just like so many other of the dear fish we hold to our hearts.

But, that's the beauty of a Forum! Lots of different opinions, and no one needs to convince me of anything. I'm just a guy who has a boat to wax that keeps getting distracted by fish. :) Lol.

Well done Mr duck boots, we are all just giving the best advice we can, you can redeem yourself yet. It's not that 1000's of people don't make the same mistakes but your on the biggest fish forum in the world now (I think) and we need to be responsible. most of us know the real monsters should be special order and not floating around every LFS... hell, the lfs owners even know those fish are basically destined for a cruel life of suffering and misery 99.9% of the time.

I don't know why you all waste your time on this guy.
He has zero compassion for the fish he keeps and is an absolute disgrace to the hobby.
He has been advised numerous times in the past about compatibility and still countless fish have been beaten to death in his "care".
A real selfish cruel individual.
One of the worst hobbyists I have encountered during my time on mfk.
Mr duckboots, you are a disgrace and should not be allowed to keep animals.

Man the OP def got more issues than just the HITH with his dovi i see..

OP you really need to reconsider things because you seem to be digging a bigger hole for yourself.

I need help with my dovi which might have HITH.. I need help.

But then I purchased a tank buster gar for $30 because it was a steal.

On top of that, you sounded like you were content with your dovi bully the crap out of the pike and keeping it trapped under the log or whatever.. Man I wonder how you will feel in a tiny hole ALL DAY EVERY DAY and if think about coming out, Frank Castle will smart you right back in that hole. GOOD LUCK!

... I don't see any consistency here at all.

Now, Now guys, let's not get excited - he's returning the Gar and rehoming the Pike, so that's a positive thing. He's getting a 220g for the Dovii so let's see how things go for now. He's starting to improve his fishkeeping skills and listening to us so let's not alienate him and chase him off w/ negativity. Have a little faith.

I think i gotta agree with Stanzzzz7.

I would have more understanding for someone who simply doesn't know better and doesn't have access to the information to better education himself.

But we a few quick google searches and a bit of reading the OP would of known everything he needed to get started keeping monsters. Its about taking responsibility for another living thing. Understanding its whole life, happiness, quality of life is in your hands. That's a HUGE amount of power and responsibility that I feel way too many humans take for granted.

With that said if the OP is willing to get rid of all fish minus the favorite and provide a proper home I am more than happy to contribute to helping him with any future problems. At some point we need to make a point as a community to stand against this sort of behavior and send a message that we don't tolerance ignorance.

Dude, you're late to the party - we all already gave him that treatment and in my experience I have noticed he's much more receptive to proper guidance instead of people bashing him all the time. We only started seeing improvements on his behalf when I started giving him the benefit of the doubt and treating him a little better. Some people are hardheaded or stubborn or ignorant or whatever the case, and i'm sure we could pick out each others' flaws all day, but the point is we ALL have them.

NOW, if WE don't learn from experience which members respond better to positive influence and which ones don't................ doesn't that mean we are doing the exact same thing THEY are? That's hypocrisy no matter how we want to look at it, so let's not kid ourselves.

Sometimes you catch more flies with honey.......

and sometimes you catch more flies with DUNG. :D
