Black Breathing Funny

I would leave the temp around 80 degrees. Cooler water holds more o2. I would add 1 tablespoon of salt per 10 gallons of water. The added electrolites help gills and O2 transfer. and get your nitrates below 20ppm

I just got home from work...He is breathing better however still not 100%. Should I do another 50% water change? That would be the second one today. The only thing that I can think of is that the Nitrites are high and my test kit isn't working right. The FX5 has been on the tank for 2 months now and has 2 full trays of bio. Any ideas for why they would spike all of the sudden?

Eric

I did another 50% change tonight before bed and cleaned out both FX5's. I had put a polishing pad in each and noticed that both were VERY dirty especially considering they were only in there for 4 days each. Both have been taken out. Any ideas for what could have caused a out of the nowhere nitrite spike?

Eric

Do you have ammo chips in your filter? Any new Ammo chips or if totally cleaned off, did you prime them in salt water? It's a long shot, sounds like you're getting it back under control.

On your test kit, is it new or old? Is there any expiration dates on the bottles? You know the importace of detail, if you doubt the results, document and do a new battery of tsts, remember to clean, rinse and get a good true water sample.

Are you on well or city water? I have a well and there are dramatic seasonal changes in the water due to snow/glacial melt, runoff, etc)

I am in Vegas so it is city water. I do not have ammo chips or anything in the filter. I did however have some carbon and ammo chips in there last night that I took out. They had only been in the filter for 4 days.

I will be getting a new test kit very soon, till then I will just be changing the water very ofter and I am going to have my g/f pick up some fresh Bio-Spira.

My media is-
FX5 1- Biohome, Fluval Bio Rings, Fluval Pre-Filter, Purigen
FX5 2- Biohome, Fluval Bio Rings, Efi lava, Efi Substrate, Fluval Pre-Filter

FX5 1 is the new filter however all of the listed media was from another cycled filter. The only thing that I can think of is that the water was not flowing over the bio media due to the polishing pads constricting the flow. I don't know...I am lost on this one!

Well he just ate for the first time in 3 days!:nilly:

He still has a little bit of gasping/gulping and does a weird thing with his jaw where it looks like he is trying to throw something up every once in a while. After affects from the nitrite spike?

Being that I did 2 50% water changes yesterday is the best bet just to keep doing large changes or should I go with smaller changes for the next few days?

Eric

depends how much time you have. More time, more little water changes. Less time, 50% water changes. Since he ate, you can go down to one 50% water change, or you can keep going til hes perfect again.

Well he ate like a chamo last night when I fed him shrimp. His breathing is back to normal so I have removed the extra air pump. I will do another 50% change tomorrow just in case.

Eric

Well my black went back to normal and started eating great again until this week he started breathing a little heavy and has stopped eating again...I am lost! Water params are great..Everything at 0 and nitrates below 5ppm. I put the second air pump back on the tank that I had taken off when he went back to normal.
