yes, Excel (or CO2) does help; in part, I believe, because it helps the plants to out-compete the algae . . .

I've also heard people have killed off beard algae with over-doses of Prime; Seachem confirms that they have heard this anecdotally, but I don't know that there is any scientific proof

higher high such as 30ppm+ helps keep it at bay. excel kills what bba you have. most people squirt it at the bba and/or add a double dose to the tank. excel has some algaecide in it or something that kills it. there are some risks with excel. 1 lowers the o2 level in the tank. 2 some plants can melt with excel like vals and anacharis.
 
just an aside: my SAE's are currently going over the anubias in my 90G, nibbling on the little bits of algae there . . . so, they're trying :)
