Hey, this fish caught my eye at the LFS and was wondering what i would need in order to house one. I havnt been able to find much on the net so how big a tank would they need, subsrate, i heard they like faster flowing water, diet, basically what i need to know. I wouldnt get it now just something for later down the road as long as i can house it and keep it healthy.

-Thanks-

I think you are refering to Hemibagrus wyckii. This is a very aggressive cat and it need to be keep alone in a big tank.

Good luck:)

They are awesome looking catfish but don't put them in a tank with any other fish that you like. Mine ate my 2 Payara and also a Blue Gourami. All 3 were the same size as he was. He is only about 3-4 inches long but eats like he is twice that size.

Ok, they have two of these at the store. Both of whom have some problems with them. The smaller one his body is permantly shapped like an S and swims weird. And the larger one has a slight slight curve but swims normal. How active are these guys, these one just ly around all the time in the same spot? Its jsut over a years old and is about 10-12 inch's longs, is it's growth normal to what it should be? The owner i was talking to said he was gonna have to kill the little one cause it's messed and he said he might have to the bigger one if no one buy's it then i said i'll take it and i got a sweet deal for it($15).

Im building an indoor pond for it but before i get it i was just wondering if the bigger one which i'd get is healthy enough and that im not getting one that wouldnt act like a normal one. The tank it's in, in the petstore has basically no current either. Water is just dripping in from above.

gets close to 30'' useually not over 24'' not a picky eater at all you shouldn't have trouble feeding it not picky about substrate

Generally a nasty fish as will most hemibagrus some have kept them with much larger fish but most of the time fish are found torn to shreds

I thought the black devil cat was a bagarius yarelli? The yarelli is hard to get ahold of, so it probably isnt.

Either way the wyckii and the yarelli have the same basic care requirements, only the yarelli prefers cooler temps and gets 2 foot longer.

Only on MFK can someone throw 2 foot of fish around like it is nothing;)

I have a wyckii...great catfish!!

I've been one of the few people who has had luck keeping him in with tankmates. He pretty much claimed half of the bottom of my tank though. As soon as anything gets close to his cave he comes out jaws snapping.

H. wyckii is definitely the Black Devil Cat/Crystal Eyed Cat. As far as foods; he eats pretty much anything I offer, like market shrimp, krill, fish fillets, worms, shiners, and pellet.

I have to admit, I don't see him much. He moved a large hollowed out log to the far side of my tank, dug out a hole and then covered the log with gravel...so he obviously wants this permanent. :D He pretty much just chills inside the cave all the time...occasionaly see him come out to feed, but that's about it.

I'm actually moving him to a tank of his own in the hope that I will see him more if I force him to come out in hunt (something I don't let him do now).

They are fascinating catfish when you do see them...but I would say house him separately just to be on the safe side.
