If it didn't have ALL bd traits with belly spotting included then surely it would be down graded to a Leo/bd

Not true. There were lots of high end bds exported from the wild when the ban was lifted that did not have belly spotting.

How can you be so sure in one of your posts on this thread you stated some bd don't get belly spotting until they reach a larger size as the max size allowed to be exported was 20cm how do you know they didn't get belly spotting at a larger size

Anyway I wouldn't buy a bd for bd money unless it had ALL the bd traits

If you was buying a pedigree dog you wouldn't buy a bulldog with Great Dane legs would you you would want to by something that referents the breed as close as possible

Belly spotting is part of the bd traits for me so they should have it if not then they should be sold at a Leo/bd price

Valid points but we all know that not a single 1 of the wild bds imported were 20cm. And even though i have no proof and i dont want to post other peoples pictures but i remember alot of the high end imports did not have belly spotting.

I also raised a cb bd pup born from 1 parent with and 1 parent without belly spotting and the pup started developing spot around 8"

In the end it is all created as a price booster so it is pointless. I have a ray that is call bd by some( large white spots, dark black base, has some perimeter spoting, belly spots) yet it holds a lot of the "Leo" traits in how the spotting is arranged. It was imported from pure bd parents. Then due to peoples views it is call a bdxleo. Yet in Asia I see the same rays called bd all day long.

This maybe true but now in Asia if it's a pure bd that doesn't have belly spotting and light colour eyes they automatically down grade that ray to Leo/bd as anyone wanting to pay £1500 for a ray would expect everything a bd should have

You get many different grades of Leo/bd now and the price reflects that even double in some cases from £300 to £600

The same still goes for ANY fish it's only worth what someone is will to pay or the sex of the ray

Most breeders in Europe will only sell pairs and a female on her own would get a much higher price or breeders get left with loads of males which is no good when everyone wants 2 females to 1 male

That is true...I am looking for females and it is single males or pairs all day long. My male isnt a fan of other males. So here is mine. I got it labeled as bd. Been told it is bdxleo, pure leo and pure bd. I have also seen some in Asia with the large spot pattern like mine called pure bd. I have been told that to get the big spots the have to be bd. Also that the bd types were ti, eclipse, big spot, and heavy spot.

It gets so confusing...same with the super spot, star and heavy/high spot motoros...seems like a big game when it comes to nameling them

To me your ray is Leo/bd it has what I wouldn't call belly spotting this type of spotting is seen on standard Leo and Leo/bd

You can't go on spot size alone as spots on a small Leo may look massive but as the ray grows sometimes the ray grows into the spots with what I call the spread

Thus guy is about 12" disc right now. And the belly shot was older with the standard shot newer. Big bright white spots no messing with the pics either that is what he is.

As he has grown his spots have gotten bigger and brighter. He also has added a few spots.

To be honest belly spotting doesn't bother me as long as I'm not paying bd money for the ray

I just buy what I like no matter what people say they are

To much stigma revolves around the bd name
At the end of the day who cares what they are as long as they are healthy

If a total stranger looks in your tank and sees a nice healthy active Leo he doesn't care if you stand back and say hold up wait until he comes up the front glass to see his belly spotting the guy is far more impressed if you tell him how big they grow and how they breed than about belly spotting
