When I first washed the Estes, many grains floated on the surface in the bucket I was using. Even after several rinses, some grains would still float if exposed to air. When scooping the sand into my tank, some grains would float away; these are the ones I think got into the sump. If I could agitate the surface, most of the grains would then sink. I don't remember the 3M sand doing this.

Mine did the same thing during rinsing. got aggravated and just scooped everything off
the water surface before I added to the tank. And when you reach into the bucket and
stir it more floated to the top. rrrrggg Its like air would attach to some of it and then it would float.
Even after adding to the tank at the beginnig I had to sift it off the top. (Don't have an overflow)
Once in the tank and well established it stopped.

I have both...Find Estes disturbs easier. Agree with earlier post that 3M may be denser.
