Black Flowerhorn

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well when a flowerhorn turns black it is called a fader tihs may or my not be the case here but fader turn before they get their true color. most flowerhorn take awhile before their true color come to life ,alot of pass on then because as jeveniles their colors are often gray and dull but if you could see into the future some turn into a masterpiece.

Yeah the fh would take that tank over ime. If he's not your fav than take him back! I also would say your not overstocked with nitrate at 5ppm.

Fader or not, that FH doesn't belong in that tank, with those fish.

No need for the FH in that tank., you have a great thing going already.
The FH will most likely want to be on his/her own.
If you raise the temp up he'll just act more aggressive,no experience with FH but I know most of my fish act crazy when I go up to 80. It triggers breeding IMO, I have females who lay eggs weekly @ 80. :WHOA: :chillpill:
In a "wet pet" scenario it's fine, but you don't want a bunch of fish/cichlid going into breeding mode if you have a pair with eggs.
ie: Royal Rumble for territory.

I will try to catch him tonight and take him back tomorrow morning... tried to catch it several times but he's just too fast and I have way too many caves... and live plants.

I made a trap using a long glass jar and a cube of bloodworms but he never came in... he tried to bite thru the glass until the loaches got inside and devoured all the bait lol...

Yeah I had the temp at 82 for rapid growth cuz the salvinis were too small and I was afraid of losing them... lost like 5 already (one killed by breeding acaras, 2 doa, 1 just died) but the 3 I have left are growing nicely, so I took down the temp cuz apparently red ceibals are from uruguay and they don't like water that is too hot. I'll leave it at 75 so both the salvini and the ceibals are happy.

It's sad I can't keep it because it seems like a really nice fish but I'd rather act now and not come home one day to a tank full of dead fish.

After battling him for about 2 hours I finally caught him using 2 nets... had to move some decor which I absolutely hate because it just never falls in place again lol

I'll let him rest overnight in a net breeder and return him to the pet shop in the morning. As soon as I put him in the net breeder tho he lost the black color and showed the same purple/green from the LFS, he's currently pissed off attacking the walls of the breeder.

Scare him into the net. I corner my fish with my hand and put the net on one side and don't move it. They run from my hand right into the net. Saves a lot of time.

I think he turned black because he is being submissive.

My tank is 24" tall so in order to scare anything with my hand I'd have to get a snorkel lol

So is mine... How tall are you? I can reach the bottom of my tank but the water comes up to my shoulder.
