I thought that black Friday was a day that a tornado ripped though Edmonton Alberta Killing 28 people.

So what is black Friday in the states?

The equivalent of boxing day in canada, but it's the day after Thanksgiving in the states.

I think black friday applies mainly to clothing and electronics. Although, Drs. Fosters and Smith and BigAls usually offer free shipping around November and December. In fact BigAls is offering free shipping for orders $75 and above right now.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_(shopping)

The past couple years, my friend's and I have gone out early in the morning. My main shopping concern has always been cheap DVDs as I can normally get 10-12 for about $40. We've also gone for things like cheap electronics and my friend that's going to school for automotive engineering got a good deal on a big mechanic's tool set last year. Two years ago, we also made a "documentary" about our trip and went to a couple places like Best Buy that had the biggest lines and interviewed the first few people in like asking them things like how long they'd been there waiting and what they planned on buying. I do think it's a fun day...

the term "Black Friday" has been traced back only to the 1960s. The term "Black Friday" originated in Philadelphia in reference to the heavy traffic on that day. More recently, merchants and the media have used it instead to refer to the beginning of the period in which retailers are in the black (i.e., turning a profit).
