Mold can not and does not grow underwater. What you see is most likely fungus or algae.

Thank you for that. I was reading the same thing and shaking my head. Mold will not grow under water it needs moisture yes, but not submerged. It's fungus. My manzanita driftwood started growing all sorts of fungus and algae recently and it was used in an aquarium for 3 years and left out for a year. I threw 20 ghost shrimp in there and they are taking care of the problem for me.

That makes sense. Shouldn't cause a problem right? I will continue to siphon it when I water changes. I'd add ghost shrimp but since its under the substrate I doubt it would help. Plus my piranha would probably eat them first haha

I'll keep an eye in it, I have no problems with removing the wood if need be.

The vine could have started to root and then the roots rotted. I often start grape vine and fig tree cuttings in water once the roots start to devlope they have to be removed to some vermiculite peat mixture. If it was a fresh cutting I would suspect this was the issue. I agree it should be removed.
