Some of those Platyrhincus down there are really dark fish. They are actually well known for it. I would not consider it a rare trait but certianly a nice one... (Hell getting one not from a ditch farm / catfish farm or asia is benificial in my mind.) If these are coming from the wild then they are still better than 80% of the typical LFS fish that are often sold.

I would be Leary of thinking these particular fish are much like the Melanistic Longnosed that pop up in certain populations though. (Of coarse most tend to all get dark in spawning... there are some however that regularly produce Black gar at all seasons)

The variability of these fish is amazing and they are also chameleonlike when it comes to dark and light.

Interested in the photos of the fish when you get them...

This is a true point, but I have been collecting gar in the wild for many years now, and infact supply a large amount of gar to suppliers around the country. Alot of gars are darker in color. This one is just like no other I have ever collected. I am going to hold the fish for awhile to see if it stays black. If it is still jet black in 1-2 months I will post an auction on aquabid and give everyone the heads up here on MFK. Only time will tell if this is a true Melanistic, after comparing my fish to other pics I feel real confident it is. I will keep everyone posted. Thanks John

I can tell you one anecdotal test John...

Take a dry white cloth and wipe the fishes slime layer. In the majority of cases with the truly Melanistic fish you will bring up some Blueish or black on the slime layer. This has been noted repeatably with the Melanistic Longnosed.. I have handled Jet black Longnosed just in spawning and never noticed this... Just a thought.. Not sure the total validity but a thought...

Look forword to updates on the particular fish.

nice get the shortys yet?

Isnt there a pic somewhere here on MFK with the gars black slime coat is actually rubbed off by a fishmans glove?
