Black Ghost Knife fish -Odd Floating at top of tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good call on the heater/filter electrical leaks. This is not normal behavior.
I have seen this in LFS where there is no place to hide so they just 'hang' but I have never seen my BGK do this - ever.

As far as food - please give him/her some bloodworm... they cannot exist on a little flake food with tank mates that will take the lions share.

Thank you for your advise everyone!
I will create some new hiding spots for him and also stick a few more plants in there
as for electical currents... is that not good for him? all the stuff i have is very new so cant see there being a problem with the equipment?
as for the blood worms... last time i put blood worms in there.... 5 of my fish died! including the two other knife fish!
do you have to feed them frozen blood worms or fresh ones? I still have a whole block of blood worms in my freezers which are over a month old... Would these be ok for him or shud i buy some new ones?
Also how much Blood worm should i put in the tank.... the pet shop told me 1 frozen block but i think the fish all died from over feeding last time!
Thanks for your help!

How new was the set up when your fish died? The electrical current will interfere with the BGK so it's not good for it. Frozen bloodworms are one of my favorite foods to give to my fish. I don't see anything wrong with a month old frozen bloodworms. Depends on how many fish you have when determining how many blocks of bloodworms to put in.

Try to find out the BGK 's behaviour at night, with lights off. Does it act normal?

I just probably where he feels comfortable, What are your water parameters such as ammonia and nitrite also is your tank well aeriated. What is the temp of your tank, maybe he's hanging by the heater to be warm.

I agree, good pick up the "electrical interference" bit Cmartin. When my heater stopped working my bgk was swimming round and round it like a crazy fool which made me look and spot it wasn't working, popped a new heater in and he stopped doing it, similar thing happened with a circulation pump too.
Frozen foods, algae pellets, live feeder shrimp, prawns, defrosted peas(shelled if bgk small) etc are much much better foods than flake.
Can you post a photo of the other fish for us to ID as I feel that if they're TOO active it might be trying to stay away from them, maybe this is why it feels more comfortable near the filter? Just a thought.

new used or old as dirt, all electrical equipment in a tank of water will leak, the amount of which it leaks is the question. is it the cheapest heater they had at wal-mart, or a high dollar fancy unit? do you have a spare that you could substitute for it to see if its behavior changes? very well could be the tank mates aggression problems rather than the electrical if its just hanging out and not doing backflips around the electrical device. try frozen baby brine shrimp. get them in the cubes, thaw one, put it in, if they eat it all in a matter of 30 seconds, put in another one. brine shrimp tend to float around and seperate better than blood worms imo, to give your knife a chance get its share.

From my reading I've i heard that they're not big fans of dried prepared foods, try giving him frozen brine shrimp or bloodworms, or live brine shrimp. Sure he'll like that better. They are night feeders but mine had no problem switching to day shift for the frozen foods. Doubt he's mourning the other two, these fish are best kept at only one, they don't get along well with their own kind.
