I've been wanting to get a black ghost knife for a while now... but am unsure of the suitability of companions. I was thinking of the following as possibilities

black arowana: fairly hopeful on this one, though it's eventual size is a bit daunting

Tropical gar
Wolf fish, Hoplias malabaricus
South American Lungfish, Lepidosiren paradoxa
Green Terror
Oscar

I probably wouldn't plan on getting the whole lot of them, 3 or so would be ideal.

Also, being from Australia I was wondering whether I would find it much harder to get these fish? If the black ghost wasn't so awesome, I may have considered Australian fish, which would have probably made everything easier...

The above fishes that you just mentioned will either kill or eat the bgk. I might suggest the best tankmate for the bgk are Senegal (or Albino) Bichirs and Tiretrack eels or any other spiny eels.

You could also try Butterfly fish or Discus.

:iagree: hmmm wolf fish.. fish shredder.. *shrugs*

I have seen BGK in with aros also. But nothing too aggressive. Or too small BGK will eat smaller fish too.

Well ... Buck (my BGK) is in with Scooter a Senegal Bichir, George a reed fish,
2 Cory's, 2 blood red parrots, 2 jellybeans, 3 Clown Loach's, 3 types of pleco's, 3 green tiger barbs, and an Arowana .... used to have a couple Oscars with it too!

.... but that is my 210 gal. tank (currently)!
Some may say that one or the other aren't compatible .... :grinno:

The Aro, Oscar, and Green Terror would be fine as long as they are the same size. BGKs and GTs grow pretty slow while the Aro and Oscar grow pretty quickly. So if you decide on getting an Aro and Oscar, take size and timing in consideration.

I've been considering a BGK myself. Planning on putting him in the 120g planted with the black aro, tiretrack eel and a few loaches. The whole group will move to my 180g next spring/summer.

bump! i myself am planning to have a BGK. i am planning to buy 3 specs. am planning to start them in a 20 gallon tank. are they bruisers like oscars that destroy and dig up plants? by the way, ill start off with them about 3 inches long so they wont be that much of a hassle during my early months.

Q: is keeping 3 BGKs advisable? are like oscars that if you plan to have one, you keep only one but if you want to keep them in groups, keep many like 6 or 8?

Q: since the fish will require plants and hiding places, is it correct for me to place an undergravel filter and plant them. i am planning to put filter media under the undergravel, is this correct?

Q: i own oscars, 6 of them. when the BGK grows big like 10-12", is it advisable to mix the BGK with the oscars? i am planning to mix them if i feel the BGK is large enough that it is verymusch larger than the oscars.

That is unadvisable.
They emitt a small eletro pulse to navigate - they tend to fight each other in small areas.
