Black gravel - damp aquarium?

Im beginning to think I'll need some help scaping my aquarium since it looks damp and boring no matter what I do with it. Its a 120g, with black gravel and currently large pieces of driftwood and floating plants. The plants are going down the drain since their dampening it even further, but then what? I got a black background which prolly is stupid, but a white one looked so fake and..

Im at a loss.
