I have a tank with a nice school of neons and my new gold nugget pleco. I'm thinking of going with black gravel for a great contrast with the neons but I'm concerned that this may cause the pleco to show poorly. Suggestions?

hmm...my mate has black gravel with convicts, and yeh it looks unreal when it's all planted up, but when theres no plants it really looks terrible! the fish are all drakly coloured and it's qite hard to see them...neons would look unreal, pleco however would be hard to see, but give it ago dude...couldnt hurt

This tank is heavily planted with swords, etc. The green contrast would be awesome. I could always move the pleco...actually, with as many spots as it has it might be cool.

you will be much happier with your pleco if you have black gravel. It will make the black on the pleco blacker and the yellow will jump out more

I have some neons and a pleco in a tank with black gravel. The bkgd is also black. The tank also has several large pieces of lava rock and other lighter colored rocks. The neons look awsome and the pleco does too because he's usually hanging out on a rock and not making himself invisible on the black gravel.

This sounds like a very good idea. I'll let the pleco get used to his new home and reduce stress before I do any radical changes. I wil definitely give this a shot.

My friend had a tank I wish I had pictures of right now.

We built the tank together to fit on his desk but leave room for him to still work. It measured 4" in length and then 10" X 10" He went with black sand substrate and mixed in a small bag of yellow and green flourecent gravel and then he backlit the thing with a black light mounted on the wall behind it 24/7.

Only thing in the tank was a 9" Galaxy Pleco he picked up from Shark and black driftwood he brought back from visiting his family in Pakistain.

It always looked beautiful.

I'm trying this, hopefully this weekend.
