  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
awesome! im so jealous, i wish we could get those down here in hawaii! nice rd btw

awesome. I'm pretty sure is a melenine (bad spelling) jardini. it's the opposite of the "albino kind. There are also the xantic kind (never seen it) but that is a bright gold colour. the jardini u have has a rare gene (melenine). Lucky!

Just my 2 pence worth.

Many fish (especially Bichirs) will change their body colors and or patterns to blend in with their surroundings.

It looks to me like the fish in question is blind.
I have had many blind Bichirs that go black as it only sees black and is trying to blend in with what it thinks is it's surroundings.

It is (unfortunately) becoming quite common these days for breeders/sellers etc to purposely blind their fish to make more money as a "Black" ....

This is my knowledge and experience with Bichirs, but I'm pretty sure Arowana colors change due to their surroundings too. (Don't quote me)

Good luck with that Jar, it is unique!

* doh! Just realised some plonker has bumped this thread from like 5 years ago!

Any updated pics of your black jardini? I would presume its a monster now and jetblack in colour. A shop an hour away from me has a similar fish. I personally saw it - jet black and copper/red pearling all over the body - black and red combo.

The tank doesn't have a dark background nor a black substrate. shop owner claims it was gene and a one of a kind/rare fish (though jardini are native fish here in Aus). Fish is more than two years old, 45cm approx, perfect body/fins, eats well and I can't get more on the history.

no it has crystal clear eyes and I was in the store when the owner feed it and don't think it's blind as it can see where the food is. It moves its eyes around as well when the top cover was taken out for feeding time.

Noticed that the OP has not come back here since 2006. I may need to open up a new thread to see if there's more monster black jardinis out there.
