black knife tank mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How big are these "baby" red devils? Not going to try the mix, sorry. Considering their temperament, you are doing a big risk having your BGK mangled.

what kinds of cichlids work with them? would oscars be ok?

Angel fish, discus, maybe a severum with reservations. My severum used to nip at my CK every now and then until my CK put it to run. BGK, I think, may be too passive for the severum as it may pick it apart. With a BGK, I would look more at angel fish, silver dollars, pink kissers, smaller bichirs, bala sharks, clown loaches and gouramis. Just my opinion.

he should be fine with blood parrots though right?
and do you think he would bother pictus catfish? I was told that he should be with fish small enough to fit in his mouth

Rumor has it that Blood Parrots have such a deformed mouth that they can't do any real damage...but that's what I've heard (No experience with BPs). Pictus Cats are very active and can harass the BGK. You knid of want a mellow tank with BGKs. If you're looking for something with red, go with some Red Hook Sliver Dollars. :D

I have a breeding pair of severums with my BGK and loaches. Unfortunately, the severums are far too passive to guard their eggs.

I have kept BGKs with Cichlids for a lot of years… I currently have a 3 year old and a 5 year old BGK, each of which has been raised with Cichlids…

The Cichlids seem to ‘not understand’ the BGK and simply ignore/avoid it. I’ve never once seen one of my Cichlids show aggression to my BGKs in any way, except if/when the Cichlids are breeding. One of my BGKs is freakishly addicted to eating Cichlid eggs & fry and will get himself in some pretty rough situations trying to eat them. He does fine fighting a young pair of Dempseys but gets beat up pretty good against adult pairs…

I’ve kept BGKs with: Oscars, Dempseys, Gold/Silver Saum, Trimac, W African Jewels, Convicts, Severums and I’m sure others I’m not remembering…

I think your 7” Knife will be absolutely fine with 2” Red Devils… As the Devils mature they might get too rough for him, but I wouldn’t expect them to freak out and kill the Knife out of no where…
