black nasty tips!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had success with high temps, oxygen, and I let algae grow for them to graze on in the tank.

i have a 5 inch female in a 240 community. i gave all the fish plenty of sight breakers and places to hide. i grew her out from .5 inch to where she is now. my temps are 80-82 and she was raised on hikari gold and blood worms once a week. thats the same way i grew my pair of nastys out. there are going to be alot of different opinions on growing and pairing nastys. one i do agree with is they do not like each other at all lol. the males can grow a N hump very early especialy if there is another male in the tank. good luck. *****in fish!
p.s. expect a death : /

I've tried several times to grow some out with not much luck. I researched as much information i could but nothing seemed to help. I had temps 80-82, let algae grow, watched the protein amount in diet. They would still drop like flies do to bloat. I housed them in species only tank and community tank as well. I was going to give up on having a nasty to add to my collection.
Well, i finally am having some great luck! I decided to give it one last try. I housed a single specimen in a 40g breeder tank i had setup running about 76-78 temp. No other fish at all.
I fed him all types of food including some with very high protein. I now moved him into a 125g (still solo) and he's about 5 inches now. I'm led to believe that the major problem with raising these are stress. Either do to their own kind or other species. If i were trying to get a pair. I would raise them in separate tanks till at least 4inches and then introduce them together and hope they bond. Otherwise my experience with trying to raise them as a group has been a fail. Good luck

Seen slot videos on line of these beasts and they are so amazing, I think if I had to pick between these guys and Dovii I would go with nasty. Just such a interesting looking fish. We have had them for one week now 15 of them in a 135 with 50 Umbee they are all about a inch, and they are doing well. Could it be there is slot of confusion in the tank? I am going to pick one and grow him solo, and my buddy has room for two solo, but the rest will just have to stay in the 135 with the Umbee, we will see what happens!

do all male nasty get that.huge hump as well?

i wanna get some but ive been told not the perfect fish for the intermediate keeper.

Protein high foods are what give africans and some of the CA/SA cichlids bloat.
the fish require naturally vegetarian rich diets such as anything containing Spirulina algae. they say that if you don't feed them live food, and only occasionally give them things like insects or frozen krill then they should be fine.

I fed mine mostly Koi food, high fiber lower protein, he grew fast - they thrive in a warm tank, & keep it very clean. Throw in some other types of food 1-2x a week.

theres a thread somewhere on here discussing in depth the topic of bloat. from what ive read theres bloat,( most of us interp as a diet issue) and theres a wayyy different bloat caused by stress. its worth looking up bloat threads. its interesting. in the wild nasty fry feed off vegetation when young and is there main source of food. as they get larger they can go after bugs, smaller fish, .... high sources of protein. so if raising them and have to go by rule of thumb id stick with spirulina and very low protein. also higher temps speed up metabo to help in digestion. this should help with bloat issues. i have gotten away with pure hikari gold when raising mine. when young i put the hikari in a coffee grinder and it turns it into powder. my fry love it! water temps always 80-84.
obviously this isnt the gospel so try n do more research.

There is absolutely no credible evidence to suggest that protein causes bloat in any species of fish, unless that protein is from low quality sources that are difficult for certain fish to digest. The notion that protein is to blame goes back 25+ years ago when most commercial foods did contain vast amounts of terrestrial based grains, which did in fact cause gastrointestinal issues (especially when overfed) in some species of fish.
