Black Nasty

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Both Nadopsis tetracanthus and haitiensus are sister species, probably evolving from a single basal ancestor.
And as juvies hard to tell apart

Adult haitiensus left, and middle, juvie haitiensus right
As hard as they are to tell apart as juvies, comparing the two side by sidethe OPs pic is haitiensus.
Adult tetracanthus pair left, juvies tetracanthus middle, adult pair right.

Duanes - thanks for the pics.

yes I have no doubt they are Black Nasties. The store I got them from actually had Cubans at a similar size, in person there are obvious differences.

It seems that two have now paired off and even look like they may drop a batch of eggs!? They're only quite small 4-5", but seeing a few other reports online they seem like they are known for starting spawning young/small.

They kinda look like jaguars too and who came up with the name black nasty like that’s a horrible name

Also the one with the kok is most likely the alpha male/ tank boss so i would watch aggressiveness from him
I think the common name come from females in spawning dress when protecting their fry, when guarding fry, they turn jet black and nothing in the immediate vicinity remains alive long

But I must admit I find many common names ridiculous.
Although "Green Terror" may be appropriate if you try to house them with neons or guppies,, there are way more naturally aggressive cichlids that make Andinnoacara seem more like pussy cats than terrors.
And calling Herichthys carpintus a "Green Texas Cichlid also seems to me, an oxymoronic application, because they are not naturally found in Texas.
