Hi,
I am looking to add an aro to my tank and I'm inclined to get either a black or a Leichardti
Current setup: 125 gallons (72x24x18) (I am planning on upgrading in the future, but not earlier than 1 1/2 yrs) with (2) Cascade 1500 canisters.
Existing stock (coexisting peacefully):
(1) 12" "south american" gar fully grown (see my avatar pic), 2 hoplo cats, (2) 5" NTTs, 1 jureanse cat, (1) 8" L014 Pleco, (2) 3" (fully grown) Honduras red spot , (1) 10" female flowerhorn, (1) 6" female JD.

What is your recomandation and why ?

Thanks

If it was called a South American Gar then its not actually a true gar because theres no species of gar that only grows at a max of 12" its most likely a striped pike characin. Also to give you a heads up that tank sounds a little crowded to me. (but personally I don't like to have to many fishes in one tank its like me standing in the middle of town square just to much people) But if you really want an aro and those are the only choices available to you then I would most likely go with the Lei on the account with your current setup. But only problem is that tank won't be large enough for a lei, and you'll need to eventually upgrade before a year and a 1/2 period is over. Blacks do grow a bit slower than most aros but thats not by much, you keep regular feedings and it will certainly out grow that tank and most likely your future upgrade, blacks get larger than lei. Also I would be a bit wary about the FH Aros aren't really your fight back kind of fish they prefer to just drift back n' forth through the tank. And knowing how mean FH can get it might attack it if not just keep nipping it till it eventually got to stressed and died. I say do some more research on the species you have at hand look into them and their requirements. Also I would really work on getting a bigger tank even thats not going to be large enough for all those fish in the long run.

aros wont last 1 year and 1/2 in a 125 o.o well maybe

i told you in the other thread as well. aros is not a good idea for a tank your size. even some of the fishes like FH might attack the aro.that pic in your avatar is not a true gar, its a charachin

I would get a black as it's not as agressive as some lei's that I have seen and kept. are you sure your 125g is 24" wide? if so you would be able to keep a black in there for 1 1/2yrs.

well...

it really depends on the fish... Flowerhorn and Arowana mix do work.. I have that.. in my 150gallon.. .silver arowanas tho...

my fh are all small from 3inches to 5inches.. vs. silvers at 14inches...

so to answer your question.. it depends.... I do say that.. if u want ot do black.. make sure its abig fish.. nothing small like 2 or 3 inches.. thats asking for trouble u dont need...

u can get away with arowana in a 150 gallon.. but even then ur looking at upgrade 2-3 years down the road...

However, Black arowana are more sensative.. and not as hardy as silver arowana.. Blks are smaller in size, and growth rare isn't as scary as Silver.. which gets huge in 6 to 9 months period...

Blacks or Leis would work either way, but you'll need a tank upgrade in some time.

That said, the future tank will have to be a sizeable one, regardless of what you get. As it will also be necessary for all your other fish when they grow bigger.

I don't think an arowana is for you. You don't have a tank big enough to house the size aro that you will need to get to co exist with the large cichlids you have.

125 is fine. get a lei. looks more unique. black looks just like a silver, but the tail looks sooooo much better.

One thing I forgot to mention .....I had a silver aro in this tank for almost two yrs. (20" ), which died of what I suspected to be internal parasites (didn't feed live feeders and I treated the entire tank with no result for the aro; all other fish are currently doing great). There were no aggression issues, FH was and is very mellow and so is the JD.
I share a concern regarding the current size of the tank ,same as many of you and one regarding the lei being possibly too aggressive for my existing community. Any thoughts regarding the second part ?
