Im setting up my new tank for my redheads shortly and Im debating on either the same natural pfs sand that I have in my other tanks or trying something new with black sand... Also have a blue led light I could use as well... Im trying to find the best combination to bring out their colors.

I have them in my 33long right now with natural pfs, regular lighting, and their colors seem very pale and almost washed out. The background is just a plain black as well, so Im not sure if that could also be affecting this.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Best substrate and lighting I've tried was PFS and a combination 10k/4500k light. They look nice under LED's too. Right now I have mine under LEDs but the T5 combo I mentioned was very nice and brought out both the red and blue in them.

If they have just been added to the tank, they need time to settle in and color up. This will have to take place no matter what color substrate you select. IME you should go with with a natural color sand if you want the colors to pop. I have kept them in a black background tank and still managed to have amazing colors (check my albums for pics)

Natural all the way

I actually mixed the black and natural sands it looks pretty good a nice contrast. The back of my tank is painted black as well!

I've been painting my tanks black and using pool filter sand. I find that black sand makes cichlids look dark and sickly for some reason. I don't feel it's a good look, personally. A lot of people seem to like it though.

Pfs and black or dark blue background would do the best. Imo the only fish that look better with black substrate are red/orange fish like midas and devils.

I have them now in natural and just came from a tank with black sand. Honestly the natural makes them much lighter and their colors pop more. My red hump were same color in both.
