Black or Red Bellied?

Wow, a old topic revival.

LB 54, i really do not agree with what you are saying...
A school or red bellies can be as mean as hell if in the right conditions.
While i have seen 14-16inch blacks hiding in the corners motionless.

The 'meanness' of a piranha/s depends on two circumstances. If they are being kept in the right conditions, and if the individuals temperaments are mean or laid back.

Indeed black piranhas have more of the reputation for being generally meaner, but you cant catagories as who is meaner...

While, indeed fishcatch22 is right, red bellies can be kept individually with out any problems. But they will not display their natural behaviour on their own…they are schooling fish…

i started out with 1 red a cool but boring fish alone so i got 6 more- very cool! i to also will get a black one day but if your new to p's you prob. will get more enjoyment out of a shoal of reds at first untill you get used to the true nature of p's. just my opinion though!

Very true there dmopar74.
Go with a shoal of red bellies to begin with. They are easier to care for, cheaper and more forgiving of small mistakes.
You need to appreciate piranhas for what they are before you develop into the serra species that need to be kept solo.

I find they tend to stay proportional to tank size - when I had the two they stayed at or under 10" max (9" most likely) for the 5-6 years I had them

I could have moved them to a larger, but they werent stressed at all in the 55 IMHO

I think the reds are by far nicer looking IMO

Are you tryin' to say that fish only grow to the size of the aquarium? I hope not because that is absolutely not true, in fact it is one of the biggest myths of fish keeping. If I missunderstood you I'm sorry, I just hate to here this myth

Any time you keep fish you should be prepared and have them in the propper size aquarium, and traditionaly a 55g is the bare min for 3 RBP

you need atleast a 50 gal for both....
pygos like reds are better in groups so id say put in at least 3 in a 90...
and for the lone black atleast a 75 gal ..
look on aquascapedirect.com
u will see every type and all the specs and costs for them.

Reds take a long time to get over 10", and if they do most do not get over 12".. There are a few exceptions but only a handful..

I've been thinking of dividing my 180 in half....Partition it with clear glass or plexi....Get two rhoms and grow them side by side for life.....Then again, I'm satisfied with its current pygo residents....Hey Santa, give me two of the finest "BLOOD RED EYED, BLACK RHOMS" and have them delivered in a LONG 180+ tank tank.....LOL

If you're truely growing them out you'll be waiting a while, they grow fast up til 6" or so and then 1" a year at best. Better off buying a big one if you lack patience or 10 years.
