silvers probably have a greater chance of developing drop eye. :(
You would be correct. Silvers will develop dropeye 95% of the time, I've never seen a black with it.

it has alot to do with genes, were the come from. ;)

Absolutely. Silvers are farm bred and severely inbred, blacks are wild caught. The problem though that blacks are so heavily restricted from export that they will eventually need to be farm raised as well to supply the hobby. I expect we'll see dropeye pop up in farm raised blacks sometime during the next decade.

I have kept both up to about 18", the silver is definatley bigger (fatter) mostly, and the silver grew faster. I beleive the silver to be more tolerant of negative conditions. The black was alittle more nervous, also the black was a little more calm....when it wasn't jumpy. Silvers also develop drop-eye almost everytime by the time they're big in an aquarium.

I'd go with a black, they're about 12" smaller than silvers, and much more rare... also, IMO they have a MUCH nicer pattern/color to them than silvers, and (as already said) they typically don't get drop-eye. Both species are very hardy once they hit 6" or so, and aren;t at all difficult to feed, or at least I havn't had problems with them...
