It has been about a year since my silver died :( may his soul be in peace. Since then I have finished my 180 gallon tank(hopefully will upgrade when i get enough money) and it is almost ready for new fish. The main question is: Should I get another silver or a black. Now don't get me wrong silvers are great its just that black are better looking. I can acquire either fish at about 8" or 10" but the blacks are like 2x more $$. Are blacks worth it or would it be better to just stick with another silver. It would be great if you guys could offer me suggestions on tank mates too. We don't want him/her to get too lonely. Now for the opinions of the masters.:naughty::help2:

I like the black more than the silver due to the fact that they are so peaceful and never attack their own kind, even if the group weren't introduced at the same time. However, depend on how your silver died but i strongly suggest silver for beginner(s).

good luck for a new arowana

How did your Silver die? And if you have the money, definitely Black. From what I've heard they don't grow as fast as Silvers and when fully grown they aren't as large as Silvers in height and thickness. But the best part no Drop Eye! You will need to upgrade in the future and I think Peacock Bass, an Ornate Bichir, and a Sting Ray would be cool tank mates.

No question, black all the way. The initial cost of the fish shouldn't even come into it, spread over the lifetime of the fish and compared to the costs of feeding, housing and maintaining a fish of that size a couple of hundred extra seems insignificant. Do you really want to look at a big silver with droopy eyes for the next ten years and think "if only I'd spent a little more"...

Not completely sure how he died just found him sitting near the bottom one day so i moved him to a quaranitne tank and he died the next day.

Well my silver was starting to get it and he didnt seem too ugly.

You don't sound very sure of an upgrade, I wouldn't recommend either to live their life out in a 180g tank.

How long would you suggest the tank to house it. I heard 8' is good. I love arowana and I want to make sure that I have enough room for it not to be stress. I have been wanting for a while to try and get a 8x4x3 build going but it never took hold and I could never decide on stock for it. Any thoughts on if it would be worth it?

Honestly I would love to build and have it. Price might be out of my range for now, so I'll have to work some extra hours. Other problem is what else do I put in it as the tank yould seem kinda empty in 720 gallons of water.
