Spray paint is the easiest to me. Just put on a light coat to be careful to not spray to close 12-18" from the back. After that dries in 30-60 minutes, go back and put on another coat. Look from the front of the tank and if you can see thru it still, wait another 30-60 minutes and put on another coat. That's about it and just make sure you cover up what you don't want paint on I let it get on on trim because you don't see it in the back anyways, but if you have a tank that you can make the back the front at some time, you might want to cover the trim with tape.
No, you don't, and it sticks just fine. I'm using a dark blue/gray acrylic latex that I bought awhile ago to paint a room in the house.. This will be my first painted tank, so I did a small test area on the back of an already running aquarium. Looks nice, covers just fine..
To get the dried paint off, I just scraped it off with my fingernail.
We just started painting our 300 gallon Deep Dimension tank yesterday. We decided to use Rustoleum's oil based flat black paint. Because we went with the oil based product, we are going to give each coat a full 24 hours to dry completely. The first coat went on great. We made sure we didn't put too much on at one time and also made sure we didn't push too hard with the roller, as to create smear marks. I'm guessing it will take at least 3 coats to get the look we are striving for.
I painted the back outside of my tank black about 6 months ago. It looks great better than seeing the wall behind it. Its really easy and fairly cheap.
Sorry to bump an old thread, but i finally got around to painting my tanks today. How long until I can add my overflow and stuff back on the tank? the paint on the back is dry to the touch.
