I was at a LFS today with a friend and they had a tank of Polypterus. Most of them were albino Polypterus senegalus, but two looked different and were black (no patterning). Is a black coloration found in one species of them, or is it a common color variant for many of them? The LFS had them labeled as "Oriental/Asian Dragon Eels" or something similar and equally weird.

I wanted to look into getting one (only $12.99), but I wanted to see if the coloration could help me ID it first so I could do a little bookworming beforehand.

Anyway, I'm sure it's a long shot without pictures. But thanks for any thoughts, comments, etc! ^_^

get it, it might be the rare morph

Don't mean to second guess your ID, but I happened to think, could it be some type of loach rather than a poly? I just find it weird that any LFS would sell a african fish as an "Oriental/Asian Dragon Eel" Here's a black kuhli loach for reference.

I'm heading back Sunday or Monday and hoping one of them is still there (they didn't seem to be selling many of the Polys in general). But right now I have to head up to Boston to take my uncle to the ER, oh boy. I'll post pictures, if I get it, on Monday! Thanks all! ^_^

If it's all still there grab a pic. If it's really all black and they have more than one buy them. I'll pay that 12.99 plus shipping to get one here.
