Was curious about something. I know all black rays are out of brazil so... Are BD, henleii, and leos found in the same river/location. We are always questioning the hybridization of rays in captivity and it seems just as easy to breed hybrids as pure bloods. Now if they are in similar locations wouldn't there be hybrids wild caught more often? It seems a leo/henleii ends up looking like a leo with crazier spots and underbelly spotting. Is it possible BDS were wild bred leo/henleii that eventually possibly just led to those hybrids breeding back to more pure leos over time to make there spotting more white and traditional leo looking but still maintaining the belly spotting and could also be why they are more rare in the wild. omething like this thought would take time to be where it is now cause I believe BD pups look more black than brown as a henleii or even leo/henleii hybrid.. Follow me? Same with P14, they start off brown like a henleii and go through a crazy transformation. Could it have been originally from a henleii crossed with something else and eventually wild population numbers increased to make it become its own species? Not sure who actually will read this whole thing or even understand what I am trying to say. Just a thought I had

Hello,
leopoldi (xingu) and henlei(tocantins) are from completly differen rivers
Also P14 are far away of both(they are together with pearls in the tapajos area I think, correct me if I´m wrong)

Not that my opinion matters much as I'm still fairly new to rays, but I feel natural hybridization is something that happens a lot more than we give credit to. I wouldn't be suprised if some of the rays in which we think are a seperate species is just 2 species crossed on such a regular basis that we view it as its own species.

The rivers black rays are found in are pretty isolated from each other so I REALLY doubt we are fishing out fresh hybrids.

However, that is not to say just a couple thousand years ago things could have been different and hybridization occoured.

I agree. One thing I always wanted to argue. People are always saying they are from two different parts of the river or to far away. All sort of animals migrate and a lot migrate just to breed. So whose to say stingrays don't do the same? Why some may just be hybrids from the wild.

Ofcourse there a really many natural hybrids...but no leo/henlei ;)
leo/scobina, p14/pearl is possible( i think there was a p14/pearl wildcaught imported to Germany), but leo/henlei without beeing introduced by human not.

Who wouldn't travel a few hundred miles to breed with something better looking? LMAO......

All it would take is ONE determined lil ray and you have a varient.

If a human can walk a continent then a ray should be able to swim to a different part of the Amazon.

 < getting fat....lol
