it IS a rhom, I can tell you that from all of the research I've done in preparation for mine!
Most piranha species mimic the colors of pygos as juveniles, since they live with them for protection from predators. As they get older (and get darker) they seperate from the shoal and begin leading more solitude lives.
It's a great defense mechanism, since not much in the amazon is going to eat a whole shoal of pygos. Safety in numbers here. But they mimic the colors in order to blend in.
So YES, Rhoms can come in colors. Maybe you didn't get yours small? Or the small ones you've seen just haven't been as colorful.
A lot of rhom colors depend on the collection point. If it's an area without Pygos, then they wouldn't have colors. If they have them, then they would have plenty of color.
