Black sand-blasting sand?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There have been a couple of threads about this. I never had an answer myself, but other have said that they were worried about the residue on the sand, because it is coal. Generally, no one really has personal expirience with this at this site as far as I know.

sounds like it could do with getting tested. fill a 10 gal half way with it and add a filter and a few guppys, the high level of sand will cause what ever toxins to build up faster if the fish die i would stay away from it.

i was lookin at it when i first got sand a while back.. i ended up getting the tan silica sand instead.. i think because it is a slag it can contain metals that would end up rusting in your water.. safer to go with color quartz :D just a lil more expensive

200 lb of color quarts is gonna run around 80 bucks.. considerably cheaper than moon
sand.. but i guess the sand blasting sand is gonna be around 20 bucks?? so it comes down to, are you willing to sacrifice the likelihood of your fish for 60 bucks??

on the otherhand.. if its harmless, then why not. but we dont know that for sure..

That's true! I'm just looking for anyone with long term experience. Barring that, I'll pick something else! There's no way I'm sacrificing my fish. Love Um To Much!!!

Hello i personally have never used the sand blaster sand for a fish tank. But i have a sand blaster that i use in restoring old cars exct and the stuff is nasty i wouldn't use it. and no it's not sharp to the touch but isn't round either or smooth. It is very "gritty". And remeber that it is used to blast paint and rust of or cars so in my opinion even if it is safe to use i wouldn't use it.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey allen Braley
