Black sand

Heck with it if your gonna mix it just leave the old sand or is it really deep already? Also i know it's been said already, but I can testify to the fact that black sand darkens fish. My Silver Dollars and Armatus's are real dark grey now it was a mistake with silver fish. Should have realized a silver fish reflects they're surroundings so black sand almost black fish. Personally I would suggest black background with white sand the contrast is killer and should make the piranha's silver look brighter. Plus black backgrounds are great for pics again it's the contrast thing, makes the fish pop more in photo's. Good Luck hope I helped.

have you seen pics of 50/50 mixed sand? I dont' think you want the complete salt and pepper look but i could be wrong. All the best looks i've seen have had a much larger percentage of black sand

I agree if your gonna mix a predominately black substrate would look better than 50/50. If your gonna take it out I used a really fine net to take out the majority of it and siphoned the rest out with my hose. This way you don't have to empty your tank. When you put the new sand in use a tube and a funnel to minimize the water clouding. After rinsing mine and adding new sand this way my tank was cloudy for like 4 hours then crystalclear though I cheated a little I used Accurelf.
