Black Sand????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've found that black substrate helps my dats stay more stable but on the flip side my buddy has a tank with a black background and gravel substrate and his dats are always dark and blotchy hiding up against the wall. Its kind of a toss up. I'd try a reddish sand with black mixed in

Thanks for the input but I just googled Black Beauty sand (which I have tons of at work) and its says it sharp and would not be safe for sand sifters. Tahitian Moon Sand possibly????

i've got tahitian moon sand. It depends on what kind of fish you're keeping/going to keep. catfish and other floor level fish won't do so well. It is somewhat rough/sharp but not dangerous as some people have made it out to be.

I just changed from black diamond, I had geo's in it for a long while and they are fine. I also have dats and I got tired of the black it didn't feel natural to me so i changed to a dark brown sand and my dat is still 100% stable. Black diamond is fine it just sucks rinsing it.

Idk about dats but I have black sand with cichlids and it usually makes em darken up. It works wonders with firemouths though makes their colors really show.

I am on the verge of using black myself in a 150, as some cichlids color up the best against the dark subs. Also know that some darken and lose color, so im on the fence. I have it in a smaller planted tank and have no complaints although covered mostly in moss. Iv red that feces really shows againts the black.

Anyone know how a synspilum will be effected by the black sand, or a hartwegi and bicourti

I had bought some stuff that requires no rinseing and is not sharp, in the planted tank with sand sifting geos. Ill get the name when I get home.
