I used to have a black background and black sand and found that most of the fish I put in there would become too dark. They only thing that really looked good were Albinos, lol! But I also didn't turn on the lights very often. I tend to leave the lights off.

I just which out all my black sand, with black sand and black backgrounds all my central americans would darken up,but on the other hand all my geos did really well over black(colorwise)synspilums and hartwegi will most likely darken up,my synspilum would turn almost gray.

I have black beauty in 6 of my tanks.my flag tail really colored up when we put him in with the black sand black on three sides tank. It also colored up my orino bass and red tail gourami very nicely. Also have all kinds of fish on it and never had any problems with it. Plecos, catfish,6 different types gobies, bichirs,

My polleni's and cubans look the best over the black sand and I am keeping them over it, everything else got too dark for me, my wife has a EBJD that basically became jet black. I went with a darker brown to try and get the best of both worlds without the too bright look of playsand. I also mixed some of the black sand in. For me it just looks more like a riverbed or lake, so gives me a more natural feel.

Yea some cichlids try to blend in causing the darker color, lighter body fish look better, or so Ive read.

I think you might be right on him being a zo. I think my viejas looked better before i moved them to my 135 w/ the black gravel. They had better colir in my 120 with black and natural mix. I think if you wany to use black sand maybe add some large light colored rocks. Im actually about to try that in my vieja tank to see if it helps their colors.
