I also use black diamond 20/40 blasting media and haven't had a problem so far. I love it but my go to garnet for my bichirs. I'll continue using this until I find a reason not to from personal experience.

Be aware that black sand tends to point out and highlight every piece and fragment of poop that settles on top of it. If this is something that really annoys you then you may want to reconsider or be ready to vacuum poop daily

Agree 100% bothers me so much but makes the fish look so good.

I am another big fan of Black Diamond. I use it in two tanks, one being my 150 planted that I keep my Fahaka in. Some people report it causing abrasions to delicate fish that dig but I haven't had any issues with it.

I had first hand experience with pool filter sand causing multiple sores on the underside of a motor ray. I removed the sand and they all cleared up after several weeks. There was a microscopic image I saw a while back which compared pool filter sand to a 3m sand. The pool filter sand grains were extremely sharp at the edges compared with the 3m. I'll probably try out this black sand since I'm not in the sting ray game anymore.

I bought 3 50 pound bags of the black Diamond Blasting black sand 20/40 grade from the tractor company. Went to wash my first bucket. So I looked at the sand just to inspect it. Low and behold I found some very small long round shaped bits of I don't what it is. But since I'm going with geos in my tank I found it to be not safe for them sifting through the sand. Wasted $27 for all 3 bags. So I went with 2 50lbs bags of play sand from home Depot for 4.99 each. Feels much better than the black Diamond sand.

Sure. I'll post up a photo later today of the extra stuff I found. The tractor company had 2 types of different grades. 20/40 medium and fine I think it was 30/60. Just thought what I found wasn't going to be safe for my geos sifting through the sand.

Well that sucks. What part of the county are you in, as someone mentioned before it may be region specific. I'm nw panhandle of Florida and just rinsed 2 bags for my daughters tank and it had no abnormalities. I've got 2.5-3 bags in my geo tank as well. No probs there.
