Black gravel darkens the bichirs' colors as a whole. My lapradei darken quite a lot in an all-sided black tank, but its contrast dropped.

sooooooo with black sand i shouldnt do black sides?

the whole bichir will darken, patterns and base colors, so it'll lose most of the contrast. with black sand AND black sides, the effect will be more drastic, and they'll probably end up looking like charcoal haha

i wouldnt use all black. like what hao and kingel does, use a mix of dif colors of sand. they seem to like the combo of black, red and tan i think. and their bichirs look really good. IME i now use slate tile, which is black, red, gold and some green, my sen darkened up, my ornate became darker, and my lap got darker and his pattern became more defined. still waiting to see what will happen with the endli i got two days ago.
