interesting,

Here's my old senegal "Gimpy" on black/red gravel showing a nice olive color...

Here's Gimpy (on the left) after moving him in with Bella shortly before I sold them. Bella was always kept on the pictured "natural" gravel, and you can clearly see the color difference.

And finally my Endli on black gravel...

As much as I enjoy natural-looking tanks, black substrate does wonders for bichirs coloration

I too enjoy natural looking tanks and to me black is natural enough thanks for the input I cant wait till I can clean the sand tomorrow (too late now). btw is your endli sb?

Even in African biotope where the bichirs are native. Black is not often seen and more like tan, red or buff are common. That's why bichirs color up very well in red and tan as it's natural for them. Black nope. And so many people thinks that red, tan are not natural color substrates. Lol!

Here is a biotope taken from Congo. Pics is from polypterus aqualog book.

hmm interesting

i havent bought the sand yet but i dont think i can get my hands on red right now so ill just go with black

btw make sure you dont take all your gravel at once... you can lose a lot of water and BB, which wouldnt be good.

I know, I've taken out about half of it now and I put 2 emporer filters from another tank onto it to keep the bb up for now

the attachments function seems to be disabled at the moment.
i will post them asap though.
