is there anything i can do to make my severum brighten up? he is at or close to 4 inches, and constantly a solid black, and i do mean BLACK. the gravel is natural colored medium sized pebbles, there is a large peice of mopani drift wood and TONS of fake plants to hide in, its a 35 gallon tank. tank mates are 2 other smaller severums m/f (who are both different shades also, one is always silvery with lots of black stripes, the other is showing typical solid silvery-green with spots and stripes with red fins) a pearl gourami, a platinum gourami, a school of danios a school of white clouds a school of blood fin tetras, a synodontis catfish, and (temporarily) 6 1 inch convict fry i'm growing out. minimum of 50 percent water change at least once a week, undergravel filter, ad i think a 75 or 100 gallon filter. temperature a steady 78, normal chemistry, and no aggression in the tank. they are fed a combo of frozen foods in the AM(brine shrimp, spirulina myosis shrimp, bloodworms) tubifex worms 3x a week, and omega one super veggie flakes in the afternoon and evening. you can see him face on in the pic, the water is brown because of the drift wood( its time to change the carbon:grinyes:)

my bad he's 3 inches not 4, which makes his tank mates 2- 2 1/2 inches...cant find my ruler. he is dead cente rin the pic, behind the water-drip mark... *shrugs* tomorrow is cleaning day, i'll try to get him in a net to get a better pic. i'll try to get shots of everyone, i'd love if i could get an opinion on sex..

not sure but he doenst look black to me in that pic. looks like a normal severum. could be the lighting or whhat not. try to take some better pics when you do a fresh water change and clean the glass so we can see him better

Hard to say but looks normal. Impossible to sex with that pic.

hes not the sev. in the middle, thats one of my smaller ones i think is male,, he is the face right above the normal looking sev, to the left of the streak..lol.. i'll just try to get some pics tomorrow.

Dominant Severum will be dark olive/black, and to be honest I loved the look of them. Breeding females will also be a very dark olive/black colour. It essentially means your fish is healthy and enjoying itself; not sure if I'd want that to change.

Only properly coloured photo I ever got of my aggressive female.

ah now that makes sense. he used to be normal colored before i added the two other sevs, within a day of the additions, he turned dark. as long as its not something i have to be worried about,(and it means hes being kept well) its all good:woot:
is there a way to sex them aside from going by fins and face coloring? the two largest (the black one and that one in the pic) both have longer, pointed dorsal and anal fins. the third has an obviously more rounded set of fins on her, is it just because its the smallest, and least dominant? i havent seen any signs of aggression whatso ever, these guys are more mellow than any community fish i'v ever had!
and at what size would they be showing the desire to breed?
thanks!!

The facial wormings are 99% accurate, dark worms that are also present between the eyes is almost definitely a male. They'll be capable of breeding at around 4", but they're terrible parents so unless you've got fry tanks it's highly doubtful you'll have any grow up.

thanks so much! do you know that in the past hour you've given me more helpful info that any website i'v found in 3 months of searching?!
