all 3 of mine are different colors, they really dont change much, just an extra stripe here, or a red fin there..lol it makes telling them apart very easy. i just added a few pregnant swordtails to provide snacks on the go for them..yum yum!

My big male is actually very light (hes in the avatar)

On MFK maybe, there's a lot of SA fans down here on local boards that could easily put me to shame ;).

This is a guess only--hard to put myself in your shoes--for one I would feed them a high end cichlid food as a 90% staple--either Xtreme-or Spectrum--crumble is best as it's not heat processed. You don't mention tank size--severums do better in deeper tanks. Severums are quite tolerant of varying water qualities--your making your water changes--it could be the food. A crumble of either brand could do wonders. You are what you eat--so they say.

all the cichlid pellets i'v looked have a relatively high percent of protein..everything iv read says sevs. a herbavores, and to feed them a veggie based diet.. i had the largest one on cichlid food for a while, and he didnt seem to be growing, since switching to the mainly veggie based diet, he's perked up alot, more active and growing better..i actually caught all 4 of them grazing on some anacharis last night when i got up to use the bathroom.. its just the biggest one whos color is dark, aside from his color he's healthy and active, the other 2 turquoise or greens are both typical colored.
right now they are in a 30 gallon long, i'll be moving them into a 55 when i get my "christmas present" for myself, a 150 long for my SA cichlids.

Dark colouration in Severums is a positive sign. Light specimens are still healthy (there are plenty of Green/Turqouise Severums that are very light in colour, I've got one and Craggy's avatar is a perfect example) but when stressed or sick they will be a very pale cream colour, bordering on white, and will also show full vertical barring in their body (although mine also do this when they're feeding).

Severums are indeed herbivores at heart, but feeding a staple diet of protein based Cichlid pellets (I'm using NLS, Omega One and Hikari Gold/BioGold+) is fine, as long as they get vegetables mixed in every so often.

do you think the frozen foods they get are enough protein for them? i also throw in some betta pellets every once in a while..gotta use that left over food:)
