black snakes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a Black pine. He is a cool snake. The only colubrid I have. I might try to get him a girl this year since he is only a year old. The other type that was left out are Black milks. Very cool snakes that will turn black as adults. Nothing beats a 5.5-6 foot jet black pine though. Adults are just awesome! My 2 cents.

please post a pic of you holding it if you got one.I want one real bad but dont hav the room just yet, what do they usually run?

Texas Indigos stay black, some even keep the red coloration on the chin and belly. Anyhow, they're protected here in Texas, we occasionally find them in the yard. Like DirtyBlackSocks stated; eastern hognoses are nice, I especially find the all black or menalistic hogs very attractive.

(i let the house cat, get a whiff of the snake.... snake was found in our yard)

You could also look for some really dark Cribos, those are something neat and big!

Cribos can be nippy though, and they're generally WC so there's those issues. If you really want one go for it, but they're not easy.

Best bet would probably be a black rar/easter rat (what we always just called "blacksnakes") though it seems most of the E. o. obsoleta in the trade are albinos. That or a black king or pine. Coachwhips and racers can be less than ideal captives.

No one's mentioned black milksnakes. They're very nice. They're one of the bigger milks too, up to 6 ft.

Also be aware "black kingsnakes" covers several varieties, some of which are blacker than others. Desert black kings (Lampropeltis getula nigrita) are a dull solid black, not glossy like black milks. Eastern black kings (L. g. nigra) have yellow flecks in a band pattern, sort of intermediate between eastern kings and speckled kings. There are also some California kings (L. g. californiae) that are mostly black.
