I just started to notice black spots on my cichlids. They are not bump more like paint.. The only thing out of line is my no3 its always between 40-80ppm. I have a fluval c4 on this 30gallon tank. It has 3 3in long african chiclids in it please help.

+1 on pics. Please post water perameters ammonia , nitrite, nitrate, Ph and hardness.

What is the temerature in the tank? Steady temperatures over 83 and a diet high in spirulina (what are you feeding?) water qualty (you are showing an ammonia reading and high nitrates) and genetics have all been assocated with this. It is non pathogenic so no meds are required. I would step up water changes to eliminate any ammonia readings, try some seachem Stability. Do a good substrate cleaning and rinse filter media in a bucket of tank water. I would suspect in this instance it is a water related issue, get the numbers straightened out and they should be fine.

Water stays steady 73-78 the filter has been in the tank for about 6 weeks plus. The old filter was in there for the first 4 weeks with it. Substrate gets vacuumed on every water change. I do water changes once a week (10 gallons). I use stability after every water change with stress guard and prime. Also the recommend amount of chiclid salt needed for new water.

What is your tap water reading? The tank is still showing ammonia and the nitrates are high so somthing is off some where. You have to get rid of the ammonia and get the nitrates down below 20ppm.

Agree with Tom, those nitrate are in the high stress range, and because 30 gallons is very small, I'd up the water changes.
If it were me, I'd be doing 10 gallon water changes ever other day (which in percentage, is what I do on my tanks(I have about 1000 gals in tanks and do 30% every other day)) to get nitrates down to the below 10ppm range.
