hi i know this isnt a monster fish question but you all seem to know everything so i will ask my question here.... im going to set up a nother tank, 8g pentagon acrylic, and i painted the two short sides and the back black already and im want to put in a black bottom but i dont know if i should get sand or gravel... i found this stuff online but its like 20 usd.... which is alittle out of my price range... the tank is either going to be for a dwarf puffer or a school of about 6-9 small tetras... havent made up my mind yet... i hear that both like dim lighting with lot of plants and i figured that black would make the fish color pop

anyway what substraight should i get sand or gravel? and why? is that black sand worth it?

Thanks Matty :nilly:

I have a tank that is all black except for the clear front (obviously) and I love it. I have black sand in it, and the fish color looks great. I also think it would be cool with ghost shrimp on the bottom. I like contrast:)

tms has been my favorite substrate. not the cheapest but looks sharp. used to always have 'black' tanks.

I have picked up the black gravel, and the tahitan black sand. I love the sand it looks really good, just remember all you really need is no more then 3/4 of an inch.

i went with black gravel... i dont think it looks as nice as the sand but i wasnt about to pay 24 bucks for sand when this only cost 6... anyway i think it looks good water is clearing up and cycling now.... im going to try and do a fishless cycle that is jump started with some stuff from my oscar tank... see how it goes thanks for the advice :nilly: :nilly: :nilly:

those pictures dont look like the tank actually looks it is really black... looks kind of grey in these pictures...

i couldnt stand to see that tank sit there empty so i went and got some fish to help it along.... two little orange things that i really like and will keep in there... no puffers.. but these guys look like they were made for this tank i dont think they could look any better... in a few weeks ill get like 5 more.... 99cents per fish

The only problem iv had with the sand , is that it kidna gets sucked up in the siphon , but if you mix it with black gravel it just doesnt look as kool.

Them little orange things look like platys, i wouldn't bother buying more as they have live babies every month so soon the tank will be over crowded. platies should be kept 2 or more females to every male. If you only got females, they store sperm and can still have fry for another 6 months lol
