Black Tip Shark

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Matt and Water_baby,
I think nativelover was referring to the common shovelnose guitarfish in California Rhinobatus productus and you guys are thinking of the hard-to-get Australian critter. The common CA shovelnose is not difficult to obtain.

Have any of you even seen the shark exhibit at Scripps? It is tiny! The baby black tips they have there already have swim in a tight circle because there is simply nowhere to go. It is actually a pretty sad display.

Really. Hmmm, that would be a real shame with all they stand for. Never seen it first hand, but I would hope for better than that.

:( Bummer that really stinks, you think that they would try to transfer to another aquarium.

It's like I've mentioned in other threads....people think zoos and aquariums are a 'catch all' for fish they can't handle anymore. But they're not. All of us have specific plans for animals etc..... taking in random mistakes people made is'nt our problem. Not many places want black tips, nurse sharks or pacu (had to add that one in there). They require too mach swimming space and often times pools that large are full of animals that would eat them.

Yea, I know how that is. I am not to familiar with the what Aquariums don't want list but I know what a lot of Zoos don't want. We have lots of Leopard Tortoises, a Serval no one wanted, the SPCA gave us a Cougar once, an Iguana who just racked up vet bills like crazy, someone left ferrets in our Monkey House once, and people always are trying to donate stuff that zoos don't want. Thanks Matt for clarifying what Aquariums don't want, I didn't really know.

Man, you should see the list of stuff that people try to drop off.....A lot of the time, they sneak stuff in and just dump it in a tank.

Most of your 'common' pet shop sharks are things we just laugh at. Black tips, nurse, some wobbs and the like. Most places won't even take bamboo or cat sharks anymore. From our stand point, all we're doing is aiding the bad habits of pet owners who have no clue. Not to mention who knows what types of issues we'd be introducing into our large collections (even after quarantine). The thing is a lot of people see a type of animal at a facility, and they assume that if they buy one, that facility will take it. Usually, we don't. We have our own channels to aquire animals through. It's a detail we look at when opening an exhibit. It's also the biggest reason I don't want to display pacu and oscars. But since we are going to have pacu, I'm going to make a few signs talking about why the public should NOT buy them.

As an example, there was a guy who tried to donate his nurse about a month ago. It was almost three feet....way too big for his home tank, but at three feet would be a snack to the other sharks we house our nurse population with.
