I have 4 small ones I am growing out. At size can I sex them and how? Looking to just keep a female.

How small are they? Anything under 5-6 inches is going to be really hard to sex. However generally males grow a lot faster than females. You can also vent sex them...but really if they are small like you are saying you will not be able to sex them at all.

Ok thank you. So when they get bigger what can I look for?

In this species its usually colors but with yours being Black (as you say) that might not be possible... We're not even sure what you have is what you say without pics. .

When they get a little bigger I will vent them.
Are there that many people getting wrongly labeled fish?
They better be right. From cichlids of the Americas.

It's strongly possible they are what they are being sold as. Just grow them out to 5-6" and post pics of the fish and the vents.

they can be sexed starting at around 4". By venting

It's been rumored that COA black umbee are gorillus blue/black hybrid, I've personally seen a few that look pretty off color for any pure variant, so I won't buy them from them
